Come up with three very different designs (6 1/2in by 9 in) for the cover. Decide on the best of the three designs. From these three, choose one for the final cover document. Set the document up in the format shown below and print it. Make a dummy book using foam board and mat board.
My Fiction Jacket was complicated to make and finding a way to combine two very different genres of stories. Using a Christmas tree was obvious, but creating a different sy-fy element as the topper was a big part of making it feel as if you are expecting to see the alien pop out from behind the tree.
The auto-biography was a bit easier to put together. I used an image trace of half my face and then using just a simple background, but using a collage of the people in the life who have gotten me to where I am now. While also giving the book a self-help slice of life story.
